Weekly UpdateWeek of December 4 Cornerstone Lesson
Thank you to Mrs. Azriel for leading the Cornerstone lesson last Friday. Please talk with your child about the topic covered in class. Cultural Doll Project This week students will be introduced to the Cultural History Project that will be due December 18-20. Please use this link to read about it. Those who want to present earlier may do so, just let me know. We will need to spread the presentations over a few days. The doll will come home on Monday. The poster will be discussed and started in class. Students will need to work on their doll and some of the research/writing on their poster for homework. I know this assignment can be challenging for those who have several nations of heritage or "different" family situations. I understand this, being adopted myself. My biological national heritage is varied. However, my adopted father was German, so I am going to focus on Germany as that is the culture we celebrated most as a family. Students may choose to do ONE of the many countries that may be in their heritage. The students will all get a copy of the paper doll template for the Cultural History Project. They will begin working on their Google Poster (in Google Classroom). At home, they should be reading and interviewing you and other family members about their country of national heritage, then typing facts onto the poster this week. Epic is a great site to use for books about each country at the proper reading level. Students will need to complete the poster and decorate the doll at home. The decorated doll and Google Drawings poster are due between December 17 and 20. Students will present over the week, so some students may present earlier and some at the end of the week. I will discuss this with students in class as well in order to create a sign up for each day. If you have a preference, please let me know. Here is a sample of a completed doll from a prior student of Mrs. Werner's, and another sample. Here is a sample poster done by Miss Soraya. One of the best parts of the Cultural Project is learning about the cultural traditions and celebrations of many cultures. Over the next two weeks, I will be reading books in the classroom about Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. If you would like to join us in the classroom to share a holiday tradition with us, please let me know! Work Folders Work will be sent home this week. Conferences Please contact me if you would like to schedule a make up conference. If you would prefer me to just send home the report card and work samples, please let me know that as well. I will be doing Zoom appointments in the evening. If you would like an appointment in person after school, that may take longer as the latest I can schedule is 4:00 p.m. I will be able to meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 2:50 and 4:00 p.m. Or in the evenings 5:15 p.m. or later, unless there is a traffic problem. I commute to Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thank you for your patience during a difficult time. Library Please remind your child to bring their library books in each Friday to return or renew. Music Music is Tuesdays at 9:30. PE PE is Thursdays right after lunch. This week in class: We do not have homework in 3rd grade, other than 20 minutes of reading each night and the occasional special project. However, students can be working on any unfinished work, like cursive practice or Zearn. Math: We will begin Module 3 this week. Below you will find helpful links to help you understand what your student will be learning. Some of your students may have even read it before. That's okay. That will help them when responding to reading questions. Students will review past, present, and future tenses of verbs this week. We will also continue to work practice all parts of speech. Please make sure your child has a book to read for free silent reading time. We will begin focusing on informational writing this week. This genre of writing involves researching a topic and learning to take notes. Students will be doing a pre-assessment of an informative writing prompt. This will simply be used for information for the district and it will serve as a reference point for growth over time. Students will also be using their Cultural Doll Project as an opportunity to learn how to take notes. We will be going over how to do this in detail in class this week. Students will finish working on their winter themed Diamante poetry. Science We will be working on the Water Cycle and Weather Prediction. Social Emotional Learning: Our next Kimochi lesson will be about silliness. For silliness to be fun, it needs to be fun for everyone. ****************************************************************************************** Week of November 27 Cultural Doll Project This week 3rd grade will be introduced to the Cultural History Project that will be due December 20. Please use this link to read about it. Those who want to present earlier may do so, just let me know. Reminder from Mrs. Bailey Please share that the deadline for parents to OPTIONALLY purchase insurance ($37 for the year) is approaching 12/1/23. The newest Chromebooks cost $450, and the insurance is a bargain for screen breakage (which is usually the cost of the entire machine since it’s a touchscreen device). Flyers are located here: SPANISH and ENGLISH (This has been offered every year, but this year we went with a different company for less money for parents - please emphasize that this insurance is optional for parents.) Work Folders Due to conferences, I will not be sending home work folders. I will give back work at conference times. Work folders will resume after Thanksgiving break.
